MANITOU WIND - BENEFITS

  • FINANCIAL

The project scope suggests a capital investment of over $1 Billion, making Manitou Wind the largest commercial venture on Vancouver Island. Due to the free, renewable energy resource - the wind - and the long term nature of off take (energy purchase) agreements, Manitou offers the prospect of sustained, reliable, and significant annual revenues to vested partners. The Manitou Wind project presents an opportunity toward energy independence, but also, a level of economic autonomy that would open many opportunities for Indigenous People.

  • SOCIO-ECONOMIC

Wind site planning, development, construction, operations and maintenances offer a range of opportunities for training and employment across industries of significance to Indigenous Peoples, such as environmental science, marine biology, engineering and internet technology.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL

Near shore wind projects eliminate the land based impacts of energy development. Wind energy development stands apart from extractive industries based on fossil fuels. Development disturbance is contained by careful wind turbine installation that occurs with minimal impact during the initial phase of the project.

After installation, the renewable aspect of wind as an energy resource results in a benign environmental impact over the decades of life of the project.

  • TERRITORIAL & CULTURAL

The Manitou Wind site sits at the territorial edge of Indigenous Peoples of Southern Vancouver Island. Manitou will provide significant economic benefits and energy dominance to Indigenous communities. It will also stand as a physical and visual symbol of Indigenous rights and title. It will provide a globally unique opportunity to mark the territory of Indigeous people, herald their autonomy, and celebrate their culture through their art, portrayed at large scale on wind turbines at the marine boundary to their territories.
